How to avoid decompression illness

What measures can be taken to avoid decompression sickness?

  • Dive within the limits of your computer or your diving tables.
  • Keep your ascent rate to a maximum 10 meters a minute.
  • Do not plan dives that need a decompression stop.
  • Make the three minute safety stop at a depth of 5 meters.
  • Don’t dive more than three times a day.
  • Always plan your deepest dive first.
  • If you are diving for several days in a row, plan your last day dive free.
  • Drink a lot of water before and after diving. Limit alcohol to the minimum during a dive vacation.
  • Don’t do any hard work before or after diving.
  • Make sure you are in good physical condition and well rested.
  • Make sure there is an interval of at least 24 hours between diving and travel by air or climbing up mountains.
